X (Formerly Twitter) Hit by DDoS Attack: Elon Musk Faces Backlash Over Controversial Response

X Under FIRE! DDoS Attack CRASHES Service – Elon Musk BLAMES Activists.

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, experienced widespread service disruptions this week due to a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, leaving users unable to access features for hours. The outage sparked frustration among its user base, with many criticizing the platform’s reliability under Elon Musk’s leadership.

As you may have noted, X was intermittently down today, in many regions, due to what X owner Elon Musk has claimed was a cyber attack on a large scale.

In response to reports of the outages, Musk explained that:

There was a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.”

Hours later, in a televised interview on Fox Business, Elon blamed a Ukraine-based group for the alleged DDoS attack.

“We’re not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyber attack to try to bring down the X system, with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.”

In a post on X, Musk blamed “radical activist groups” for the attack, claiming they were attempting to “silence free speech.” However, cybersecurity experts quickly questioned this narrative. Independent analysts suggested the attack likely originated from a coordinated bot network, though no specific group has claimed responsibility. Critics argue Musk’s focus on activism distracts from addressing systemic infrastructure vulnerabilities.

The backlash intensified as users highlighted X’s rising frequency of outages since Musk’s takeover. Advertising partners also raised concerns about platform stability, with one agency stating, “This incident undermines confidence in X as a brand-safe environment.” Meanwhile, proponents of Musk’s vision defended the platform’s “evolving resilience,” emphasizing its efforts to combat spam and bot accounts.

Cybersecurity firm Cloudflare noted a 300% spike in anomalous traffic targeting X during the attack window, corroborating the DDoS claims. Yet debates continue over whether Musk’s public blaming of activists—without evidence—further polarizes the platform’s community.

As X works to restore full functionality, questions linger about its long-term preparedness for cyber threats. With advertisers wary and users demanding consistency, Musk faces mounting pressure to prioritize both transparency and technical upgrades.
