The Biden administration is reportedly discussing plans to limit exports of advanced AI chips to certain Persian Gulf countries, Bloomberg reported Monday.
The potential restrictions would cap sales from Nvidia and AMD to countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which are heavily investing in AI technology. This follows last year’s ban on chip sales to China and export controls on 40 other countries.
The move reflects U.S. concerns about the Gulf’s growing influence in the global AI industry. Saudi Arabia recently planned a $40 billion AI investment fund, while OpenAI reportedly held funding talks with a UAE-backed fund.
White House officials declined to comment on the discussions.
