ByteDance’s TikTok is laying off hundreds of employees, mainly in Malaysia, as it shifts to AI for content moderation. The exact number is under 500, and U.S. employees are unaffected.
A TikTok spokesperson stated, “These changes strengthen our global content moderation model.” The company plans to invest $2 billion in trust and safety initiatives in 2024, with 80% of violative content removed by automated technologies.
This follows previous layoffs, including over 250 jobs in Ireland in April and around 1,000 in May.
