Microsoft Accuses Google of Secretive Lobbying in European Cloud Conflict

Microsoft has accused Google of leading a covert lobbying campaign against its Azure cloud services, aiming to influence European regulators. In a statement, Microsoft’s deputy general counsel Rima Alaily claimed that Google has backed the new Open Cloud Coalition — a group of cloud providers positioning itself as pro-competition, but allegedly designed to benefit Google’s interests.

Led by Civo’s Nicky Stewart, the coalition is set to launch on October 29, advocating for a fairer European cloud market. Microsoft argues that Google is using this group to distract from its own regulatory challenges in the U.S. and to shift European cloud policies in its favor. Google, which recently filed an antitrust complaint against Microsoft, insists the coalition is focused on fair competition and transparency, while Microsoft sees it as a strategic ploy to undermine Azure.
