Meta Unveils Plan for WhatsApp and Messenger Interoperability

Meta announced Friday its strategy to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, allowing WhatsApp and Messenger to connect with third-party messaging services.

The company plans to introduce user notifications about third-party integrations and an onboarding process for these features. Group functionality is set for 2025, with voice and video calling following in 2027.

Meta spokesperson Jane Doe said, “We’re committed to providing a safe experience while complying with DMA requirements.”

Challenges remain, including potential technical barriers and the need for other platforms to support the integration.

This move comes as Meta faces scrutiny over other DMA compliance issues, including its “pay or consent” ad model in the EU.

The timeline for full implementation remains unclear, pending cooperation from third-party services.
