Meta Takes Action Against Sextortion Scams on Facebook and Instagram

Meta is introducing new measures to combat the rise of sextortion scams, which have surged by 300% over the past three years, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

To protect users, particularly teens, Meta is enhancing detection tools for sextortion accounts. Instagram connection requests sent to teens will now include warnings about suspicious profiles, such as accounts from different countries or without mutual followers. Additionally, accounts flagged for scam behavior will be restricted from viewing follower lists.

Meta is also rolling out restrictions on screenshotting ephemeral images and expanding its default blur feature for detected nudes sent via Instagram DMs. Moreover, Meta is partnering with NCMEC and Thorn to launch educational videos and resources aimed at helping teens recognize potential sextortion scams, offering guidance and support for victims. These initiatives will be promoted to millions of teens in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
