Meta Extends Political Ad Ban Amid Misinformation Concerns

Meta announced it will extend its temporary ban on new political ads until later this week, aiming to prevent misinformation during the vote-counting period. The initial ban began on October 29, mirroring restrictions Meta imposed in 2020 and 2022 to give candidates time to address claims made in ads. Ads that ran before October 29 will still be displayed but cannot be modified.

The extended ban reflects social media companies’ efforts to combat misinformation, especially given the impact of tech layoffs on trust and safety teams and the rise of AI-generated misinformation. Meta isn’t alone—Google is also pausing U.S. election ads until after the polls close. However, X, under Elon Musk, has opted to continue running election ads this cycle.
