Ireland Introduces New Online Safety Code for TikTok and Other Video Platforms

Ireland’s media watchdog, Coimisiún na Meán, has rolled out a new Online Safety Code for video-sharing platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, which will take effect next month. This Code mandates that platforms ban harmful content such as cyberbullying, self-harm promotion, eating disorders, hate speech, and child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Unlike the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which focuses on illegal content, this Code broadens the scope to harmful content that is not illegal. Platforms are required to act on user reports and enforce these bans.

The Code also introduces age verification for platforms with adult content and requires them to offer parental controls for content unsuitable for minors. Although initially considering limiting algorithmic recommendations, this measure will now be handled under the DSA.

This new regulation marks the end of social media self-regulation, aiming to better protect users, especially children, from online harm.
