As the U.S. midterm elections approach, social media startup Bluesky is positioning itself as a fact-checked alternative to Elon Musk’s X platform. With an influx of former Twitter users, Bluesky hopes to demonstrate its ability to handle potential misinformation and disruptions around the elections.
Unlike X, which has faced criticism for its handling of political content, Bluesky is touting its focus on real-time political discussions. The startup has also hired a former Twitter Trust and Safety leader, Aaron Rodericks, to oversee its election readiness efforts.
Bluesky’s plans include reviewing content for misinformation, labeling unconfirmed reports, and removing posts that encourage voting disruption. The platform’s decentralized model also allows users to customize their moderation experience by subscribing to different services.
With X’s recent policy changes angering some users, Bluesky may be poised to benefit from another potential exodus, as it aims to demonstrate its ability to provide a more trusted social media alternative during the critical election period and beyond.
