Baidu to Expand Apollo Go Robotaxi Service Beyond China

Baidu, often dubbed the “Google of China,” is preparing to expand its autonomous ride-hailing service, Apollo Go, beyond its home market. According to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, the Beijing-based tech giant is eyeing international markets, including Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Middle East.

Baidu’s expansion comes as Chinese autonomous vehicle (AV) companies face challenges domestically, including high operational costs, fierce competition, and a decline in foreign investment. The Middle East, with its oil wealth and smart city ambitions, has already attracted competitors like Pony.ai and WeRide.

Baidu plans to enter new markets through partnerships with automotive companies, having already collaborated with Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan, which could make Japan another potential target for its Apollo Go service.
