Australia to Ban Social Media for Users Under 16

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Wednesday plans to ban social media access for children under 16. The proposed legislation, entering parliament this year, will require platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, and YouTube to prevent underage access.

“Social media is doing harm to our kids, and I’m calling time on it,” Albanese said. The ban will take effect one year after approval, with no exceptions for parental consent. This move follows Norway’s recent decision to raise its social media age limit to 15, marking Australia’s position among the strictest global regulations on youth social media use.
