Apple to Allow Third-Party App Stores on EU iPads

Apple will permit third-party app stores on iPads in the EU from September 16, alongside iPadOS 18’s release, complying with the Digital Markets Act.

This mirrors recent iOS changes, where alternative app stores like AltStore PAL and Epic Games Store are now available.

Apps require Apple’s security notarization, and developers face new terms, including a possible “Core Technology Fee.”

Web browsers can now use non-WebKit engines, though none have yet.

This marks a significant shift in Apple’s EU ecosystem control.
